Standard Rules:
Except where otherwise noted all tournaments follow the 2002 USFA Rules.
Eligibility:

All collegiate fencers eligible to fence in any NCIFL tournament regardless
of wether the school holds active (voting) rights in the league (see
code of operations).

A collegiate fencers must present valid student body cards at the start of
each competition.

There is no limitation due to student load or class standing as long as the
student currently holds enrollment status of at least one unit or class in
any graduate or undergraduate class.
Novice Fencer Classification:

Any fencer who began fencing at any establishment one calendar year or less
from the date of a tournament classifies as a 'Novice Fencer'
and may compete in novice events.

The classification includes all fencing experience (someone who fenced sabre/epee
previously but has only x months of foil fencing does NOT qualify as a
Novice Fencer.
Tornament Standards:

Novice Pools and DE's to top 8 consist of dry bouts (see judging by jury
rules). DE's of top 8 and above conducted using electric equipment.

All Pools use standard 5 touch, 3 minute bout protocol
-
All Direct Elimination bouts fought to 10 touch over two - three minute periods
with a single minute break between. (USFA vetrans format)

All events shall advance 100% of pools to DE's unless otherwise stated
prior to the beginning of the pools.
USFA Rule Changes:
Equipment:
-
Because of the nature of collegiate club equipment sharing, no fencer shall
face a penalty for malfunctioning equipment, or not bringing a second weapon
or bodycord to the strip.

DE rounds shall enforce weight and shim testing, however no penalty for
malfunctioning equipment, replacement requirement only (except in the case
of obvious fraud)

Tournaments shall not require knickers, however, full leg covering required,
and leg covering must not have easily catchable pockets, loops, etc (ie no
cargo type pants, etc)

Each bout director maintains the right to declare a piece of equipment unsafe
for bouting, and require the competitor to replace the equipment within
reasonable time with no penalty.
Coaching

There is no 'coaching time out' in the Northern California fencing league,
coaching is permitted under the same restraints covered by the USFA.

During the bout coaches are free to interact as long as they adhere to the
same standards covered by any person not on the strip (Ie, they must not
enter the strip without directors consent, and must not disturb the good
order of the strip (class 3 offense))
TEAM Entry/Scoring

Each advanced event shall have team scoring comprised by the best possible
combination of coed team members (1 male, 2 female or 2 male,1 female)

Each team will be scored by the sum of their placements, overall team standing
determined by lowest individual sum placement.
